Losing sense of time – Interview with Mascha Sonnenberg
Mascha Sonnenberg is an artist based in Bremen, Germany. She enjoys experimenting with different techniques and media, working with photography, sound and electronics.
What inspires your work?
Most ideas and inspiration come from everyday situations and reinterpreting or reliving them through a work. At the same time I like to work on functional projects to resolve everyday problems in a creative way.
How would you describe your work process?
There are many techniques and media I want to try and I write all my project ideas and interesting topics down so I can combine concepts and materials. I like to experiment and make prototypes to figure out which direction I want to go.
What is your favorite tool or material to work with?
I like being behind a camera, digital or analog exploring light, color, formats and proportions.
At the moment I’m also spending a lot of time on electronics, which is really interesting because it opens up completely new possibilities and project ideas for me.
When it comes to painting or drawing I enjoy to work with few colors on small canvases and familiar tools like the oldest most used brush I can find..
Are there mediums you feel drawn to?
I want to get more into sound based projects and producing music because sound and music are very inspiring and personal art forms to me. Another very personal medium for me is videography. I made a short movie called “Zwischen Menschen” in the past and I really want to work on another one to expand my videographic skills and explore more personal and emotional topics.
What feels most like reality to you, a dream, a memory, or an image?
An image if I took it myself and can connect it to a vivid memory. Even though dreams often feel real after waking up I automatically remind myself they are not and forget them too fast to let it feel like reality longer than a few seconds.
How do you feel about showing your work?
I always struggle to share my work because I’m a perfectionist. For me showing a piece means declaring it finished. At the same time I enjoy exhibiting as an artistic practice. Exhibition design and the way a work is presented can create an additional layer to the work I like to explore.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
Getting lost in the process and losing sense of time.
